Walter T. “Tom” Shawler, 84, of Troy, passed away at 7:47 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at StoryPoint Assisted Living. He was born December 23, 1938 in Piqua to the late Walter W. and Catherine (Gilmartin) Shawler. He married Sharon Ann Lemon June 4, 1979 in Troy; and she survives.
Other survivors include three children, Scott Shawler of Piqua, Julie Green of Cincinnati, Kenny (Mary Pat) Shawler of Kettering; four stepchildren, Danny Bennett of Piqua, Leonard (Sun) Bennett of Tacoma, Washington, Becky Powell of Troy, Dale (Patty) Bennett of Gilroy, California; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and three siblings, Marilyn (Tom) Enders of Tipp City, Ray (Louise) Shawler of Piqua, and Mary Ann (Steve) Long of Piqua. He was preceded in death by one sister, Patty Hiser.
Mr. Shawler was a 1956 graduate of Piqua Catholic High School. He worked for four years as the Postmaster for Wabash, Indiana before transitioning to serve as the Postmaster for Sidney for over 10 years before his retirement. He was a past member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He loved motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidson and enjoyed riding whenever he had the chance. He was a wonderful all around handyman and could fix about anything presented to him. Most importantly, he loved his family deeply and enjoyed spending time with them.
A service to honor his life will begin at 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2023 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Steve Shoup officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00-12:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
