Thomas E. Murphy, 88, of Piqua, passed away at 4:22 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit. He was born November 19, 1932 in Piqua to the late Edward and Marie (Brown) Murphy. He married Martha L. Barga October 4, 1958 in Frenchtown and she survives.
Other survivors include one son, Keith (Julie) Murphy of Piqua; three daughters, Teri (Lloyd) Fry of Piqua, Linda (Blake) Hinger of Troy, Letitia (Jon) Olmsted of Forest Park, Illinois; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren with one more on the way; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob (JoAnn) Barga of Tipton, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Carolyn (Jim) Barga of Versailles; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Plank; and brother-in-law, Don Plank.
Mr. Murphy was a 1951 graduate of Piqua Catholic High School. He served proudly in the United States Navy for four years on the U.S.S. Glynn during the Korean War. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #3344. He co-founded the $5 a month club and served as the church festival chair for two years. Tom and Martha operated Murphy’s Custom Floors for forty-five years. He thoroughly enjoyed the people he worked with and for. Tom never knew a stranger and loved to talk and swap stories.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Daniel P. Hunt as celebrant. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the Veteran’s Elite Tribute Squad. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
