THOMAS E. JENKINS
Thomas E. Jenkins, 84, of Troy, went to his eternal home at 4:35 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2021, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Tom was born October 7, 1937 in Piqua, the only child of the late Albert Richard and Miriam (Slack) Jenkins. He married Joyce E. Conrad on March 21, 1959, in Findlay, and that union produced three children; Jon (Robin) Jenkins, Amy (Kent) Booher, and Jason (Kelly) Jenkins. He leaves 12 grandchildren, Nate (Brittany) Jenkins, Gabrielle Jenkins, Kellen Booher, Kyler (Cheyene) Booher, Kale (Morgan) Booher, Keeley (Mike) Depositar, Emily Jenkins, and Daniel Jenkins; eight great-grandchildren, Cade, Lleyton, and Allie Booher, Hannah and Milo Jenkins, Mya and Myles Depositar, and Gryffin Booher. He was loved and adored by his family and he loved them unconditionally.
Tom was a 1955 graduate of Piqua Central High School, a 1959 graduate of Bowling Green State University, and did graduate work at Wittenberg and Wright State. He began his teaching and coaching career at Miami East, where he was an assistant football coach and the head basketball coach in the 1960s. He left teaching for six years to work as an agent with Western & Southern, and then returned to teaching and coaching at Piqua High School, he was the men’s head track coach and then the men’s golf coach until his retirement in 1997. He spent several years as a driver education instructor before fully retiring.
His favorite memories of coaching were when he took students to the state track meets. He enjoyed watching young men excel in their sport. He held a track record himself for nearly 50 years in the 220 yard/200 meter race which was broken by Brandon Saine, Mr. Ohio Football, in 1994. He was most pleased by being named to the Piqua Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
He spent many years following his children’s sporting and musical careers, and then watched most of his grandchildren’s activities. His hobbies included fishing, golfing, reading, playing cards, and doing crossword puzzles. He was a great games inventor and always had a competition ready for the family gathering at his Hardin Road home or whenever he was on vacation with them. He was at his best when surrounded by his family and was known for his great sense of humor. He will be most sadly missed.
Tom’s family will receive friends to honor his life from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 2021 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
