R. DOUGLAS HAINES Obituary

R. Douglas Haines, 73, of Troy, passed away suddenly at 8:43 p.m. Friday July 1, 2022 in his home. He was born September 27, 1948 in Piqua to Ralph H. and Elizabeth J. (Reardon) Haines of Piqua. He married Connie L. Gearhardt August 7, 1971 in Piqua; and she preceded him in death December 8, 2004. He then married Connie DeVilbiss February 24, 2007; and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, R. Christopher (Stephenie) Haines of Covington; a daughter, Beth (C. Matthew) Humphrey of Covington; a stepdaughter, Deanna (Daniel) Gudorf of Brookville; a stepson, Dean Valley of Troy; seven grandchildren, Corey, Grant, Connor, Cameron, Jordann, Jacob, Jolie; two great grandchildren, Max, Grace; and one brother, Michael (Cindy) Haines of Piqua. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Haines.

Doug was a 1966 graduate of Piqua Central High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree in business management from Wright State University. He worked at Buckeye Insurance Group for forty-five years and served as the President and CEO for twenty-five years. Alongside his family, he owned Orestod Holdings which owns Marias Technology where he served as Chairman, Glacier View Coffee, Pacific Coast Surf Styles and Elias & Oliver Boutique. He was a trustee of the Newberry Theater Preservation Foundation. Additionally he worked on the Covington Fire & Rescue for forty-four years where he served as a firefighter, Lieutenant and Treasurer. He was a founding member, an EMT, and the first Chief of the Covington Rescue Squad. He was a longstanding member of the Miami Park District board of trustees, where most recently he served as the President. He was a founding member of Grow Piqua Now and Positively Promoting Piqua. He was honored to receive the 2014 Businessperson of the year from the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce. He was the past chairman and board member of the American Association of Insurance Services, Upper Valley Medical Center, and served on the board of Peoples Savings Bank of Troy, Covington Saving and Loan, Grace Brethren Village in Englewood, and was a past president of the Covington Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the Covington Noon Optimist Club and the Salem Church of God. In his free time, he loved to spend his time learning about and admiring railroads. He was also a published photographer having photos publish in railroad books and magazines. 

A service to honor his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2022 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, Covington. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home, Piqua.
