Ralph H. Haines, 98, of Piqua, passed away peacefully at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2023 at StoryPoint Assisted Living a day before his 99th birthday. He was born November 17, 1924 in Greenville to the late Rev. Ralph Haines and the late Myrtle (Odean) Carter. He married Elizabeth “Betty” J. Reardon November 21, 1947; a union that would span 75 years; and she preceded him in death December 24, 2022.
Survivors include a son, Michael (Cindy) Haines of Piqua; seven grandchildren, Rob, Chris, Greg, Beth, Brian, Matt, Amanda; sixteen great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, R. Douglas Haines, Steven Haines; two brothers, Robert Haines, William Haines; four sisters, Bernice Batten, Celia Troope, Mary Benkert, Ruth Koenitzer; a daughter-in-law, Connie Haines; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Haines.
Mr. Haines was a 1943 graduate of Piqua Central High School. He served proudly in the United States Army in WWII in the China-Burma-India Theater. He worked as the head inspector and head of quality control at Piqua Engineering for 25 years. He also worked for French Oil for 15 years as a subcontracting expediter before his retirement. He served on the Golf Control Board; was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks where he served two terms as the Exalted Ruler; and was a member of the Miami County Foreman’s Club. He was a dedicated and avid golfer, was a member of the Golden Boys Golf Club and loved Echo Hills Golf Course where he won the City Championship twice and competed every year from 1965-1995; was the Echo Hills Champion multiple times; was a Charter Member of Echo Hills; and was honored with the opportunity to the take the ceremonial first shot at Echo Hills in 1995. Additionally, he enjoyed following the Cincinnati Bengals and Ohio State football, as well as the Cincinnati Reds.
A service to honor his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Keith A. Gebhart officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, Covington where full military honors will be provided by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad.
