Phyllis “Joan” Welbaum, 91, of Troy, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at 5:42 a.m. Sunday, January 16, 2022 at Hospice of Miami County. She was born December 17, 1930 in Pitsburg to the late Preston and Viola (Godown) Cross. She married William L. Welbaum January 26, 1951 in Troy; and he preceded her in death May 16, 1988.
Survivors include four children, Scott (Laura) Welbaum of St. Petersburg, Florida, Robert Welbaum of Piqua, Mindy (Tony) Adams of Troy, Missy Johnson of Troy; nine grandchildren, Steven Welbaum, Teaya Martin, Tonya Welbaum, Tanya Leistner, Elisa Welbaum, Zachary (Jeannie) Adams, Emily (Freddie) Morgan, Caleb (Hannah) Johnson, Jordan Johnson; three step grandchildren, Jenny (Rusty) Welker, Jason (Dena) Graham, Jessica (Richard) Haney ; seventeen great grandchildren, seven step great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one brother, Gail (Betty) Cross of West Milton; and a very dear friend, Linda Van Pelt. She was preceded in death by two sons, Billy, David; three brothers, Wilferd, Robert, Dean; four sisters, Wilma, Glenna, Mary, Kathleen; one grandchild, Nathan; one step grandchild, Logan; and a special niece, Sandy Smith.
Mrs. Welbaum was a 1948 graduate of Versailles High School. She worked as a cashier and bookkeeper for Marsh Grocery Store for 27 years before her retirement; and was present for the first bar code scan ever to happen. She was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in West Milton, was an avid Bingo player and loved her card games. Most of all, she adored her family, especially her extensive group of grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
A service to honor her life will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Pastor John Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Miami Memorial Park, Covington. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Diabetes Dayton, 2555 S.
