LaWanda M. Gerzina, 90, of Piqua, passed away peacefully at 11:42 p.m. Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the Piqua Manor Nursing Home. She was born May 13, 1933 in Brethren, Michigan to the late John and Fern (Price) Welch. She married Anthony W. “Bud” Gerzina June 12, 1955 in Columbus; and he preceded her in death April 23, 2019.
Survivors include two daughters, Tracy (Skip) Wolford of Piqua, Catherine (Tim) Kowalski of Nashville, Tennessee; one son, Greg Gerzina of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren, Patrick Gerzina, Daniel (Julia) Gerzina, Christopher (Rebecca) Gerzina, Chip (Brianne) Wolford, Lara Wolford; and four great-grandchildren, Trey, Ryan, Jack, and Ava. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Anthony David and Michael Joseph; a brother, David Welch; and two sisters, Janette Hughes, and Joann Webster.
Mrs. Gerzina was a graduate of Bretheren High School in Michigan with a class size of no more than fifteen; yet also included Mr. James Earl Jones. She went on to graduate with her Bachelors Degree in Nursing in the first graduating class of Ohio State Nursing Program. She worked for many years as an emergency room nurse at Piqua Memorial Hospital and Upper Valley Medical Center. She was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved being a part of the Piqua community. She was an active member of the Miami Valley Quilters Guild and enjoyed tending to her garden. She absolutely loved being a nurse and enjoyed caring for others throughout her life.
A private service to honor her life will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being provided to the family through the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
