Jo Ann Asher, 88, of Piqua, passed away at 12:41 a.m. Sunday, October 10, 2021 at The Avalon of Lewis Center. She was born December 17, 1932 in Cincinnati to the late George and Margaret “Peg” (Sullivan) Larick. She married Charles R. “Chuck” Asher August 6, 1955 in Franklin; a union that would span 63 years and he preceded her in death November 9, 2018.
Survivors include a son, Charles “Kent” Asher of Carey; daughter, Amy Jo (David) Carr of Piqua; two grandchildren, Brian (Randi) Asher of Westerville and Casey Jo (Matt) Patrick of Casstown; and five great-grandchildren, Bowen, Hattie, Nolan, Eliza, and Bryce.
Mrs. Asher was a graduate of Franklin High School. She attended Denison University before transferring to Miami University of Ohio where she graduated with a degree in education. She was a dedicated kindergarten teacher for over thirty-three years in Springfield, Cleveland, Euclid and Piqua City Schools. She was a longtime member of Greene Street United Methodist Church. She had a passion for serving her community through the Salvation Army, Greene Street United Methodist Church and the Piqua Arts Council. Upon her retirement from teaching, she spent ten years as a docent at the Dayton Art Institute. She was a member of the Columbian Club and the Fortnightly Club for many years. Jo and Chuck were also long time members of the Piqua Country Club where they enjoyed socializing with friends. Jo never turned down an opportunity to host family and friends; the 4th of July and Christmas parties are still talked about and remembered fondly. Jo was an avid bridge player and a frustrated golfer. Growing up an only child to a high school football coach it was only natural for Jo to marry a high school football coach. She proudly supported Chuck for more than 40 years as he was the head football coach for several schools. Her claim to fame was being the oldest cheerleader in Ohio. She not only cheered on Chuck’s football teams over the years, but she was the ultimate cheerleader for her family. She loved her family unconditionally and was their biggest supporter. Not only will Jo be remembered for the great pride she had for her family, but also for her warm and joyful connection with children. She was a beautiful soul and will be greatly missed.
A service to honor her life will begin at 6:00 p.m. Thursday October 14, 2021 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Will Leasure officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army P.O. Box 615, Piqua, OH 45356 or the Piqua Education Foundation P.O.
