Harry B. Ashburn Jr, 99, of Piqua, passed away peacefully at 6:59 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2022 in his home. He was born January 23, 1923 in Altoona, Pennsylvania to the late Harry B. and Edna (Peters) Ashburn Sr. He married Patricia A. Furbee on December 26, 1960 in Mannington, West Virginia, and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, David (Tami) Ashburn of Van Buren, Indiana, John (Joy) Ashburn of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren, Travis (Racheal) Mitchell, Christopher Ashburn, Shemeiah Macabare; and three great grandchildren Chessa, Jaycee, and Waylon. He was preceded in death by a son, three sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Ashburn was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School, Otterbein College in 1949 and earned his Masters degree in Education from Ohio University in 1962. He enjoyed a stellar teaching career beginning in Somerset School, then Lima Perry High School before joining the Piqua City School District from which he retired in 1985 as the Principal of the former Bennett Junior High School. He was a United States Army veteran having served as a Corporal during World War II. He served as a Director with the Ohio Association of Secondary School Principals and the Piqua Golf Control Board. He was a devout member of Hardin United Methodist Church. He enjoyed taking time to share his wartime experiences through programs conducted by Edison State Community College; and was proud to have one of his interviews held in the National Archives. He loved his family, making a positive difference in children’s lives and enjoyed golf and his many friendships. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and kindness.
A service to honor his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Hunsucker officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
