Frank H. Barhorst, 86, of Piqua, passed away peacefully at 2:30 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2024 at Hospice of Miami County. He was born May 17, 1938 in Sidney to the late Edwin B. and Josephine M. (Hoover) Barhorst. He married Betty Lou Russell August 17, 1957 in St. Mary Catholic Church; a union that would span 67 years; and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, Tod (Kelli) Barhorst of Morehead, Kentucky; two daughters, Cindy Moeller of Vandalia, Connie (Jeff) Stephenson of Piqua; seven grandchildren, Kevin (Lara) Moeller, Daniel Moeller, Claire Barhorst, Paige (Adam) Hicks, Blake (Karrah) Barhorst, Jennifer (Kevin) Deaton, Colby (Abigayle) Stephenson; eleven great grandchildren, Luke, Alexa, Nicholas, Leah, Adam, Liam, Lincoln, Isabella, Kevin Jr., Braxtyn, Charlie; five brothers, Ted Barhorst, Joe (Sherri) Barhorst, Bill (Mamie) Barhorst, Dan (Pam) Barhorst, all of Piqua, Mike Barhorst of Troy; and six sisters, Shirley Beard of Minster, Mary Lou (Floyd) Yinger of Sidney, Rosie (Bill) Luthman of Minster, Chris (John) Gerlach of Piqua, Jeanie Leonard of Piqua, Kathy (Luke) Braun of Jackson Center. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Douglas Moeller; a brother, Ed Barhorst; and two sisters, Marilyn Bashore, and Patt Stang.
Frank began his career at Hartzell Propeller in 1956 as a grinder for 19 years and worked as the Foreman for 2 years. He then became the Vice President of Manufacturing and remained a company officer for the next 22 years before retiring in 2001 after 45 years of dedication. He became a Piqua City Commissioner in 1988 and served two terms as the Mayor and five terms as Vice-Mayor. He served on numerous boards for the city, including the Energy Board, Miami County Canal Board, Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Piqua Improvement Corporation where he served as the President. He had been an airplane pilot for 30 years and served as the President of the Miami County Pilots Association. He was a devout member of St. Boniface Catholic Church; was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council 3344; enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Golden Boys. Additionally, he had been active for many years with the Miami County Right to Life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 2024 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Steven Shoup as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Beechwood Cemetery, Lockington. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Catholic Church 310 S. Downing St. Piqua, OH 45356; Miami County Right to Life, P.O.
