Douglas L. “Doug” Carey, 78, of Piqua, passed away peacefully at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Stillwater Healthcare Center. He was born November 18, 1943 in Piqua to the late Charles and Cecelia (Reineke) Carey. He married Marilyn Kaye Alexander June 21, 1975, and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Melinda “Mindy” (John) Sill of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Ashley (Shawn) Silvers of Piqua; four grandchildren, John “Jack” Sill, Lyla Silvers, Nora Sill, Peyton Silvers; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne “Susie” (Walker) Smitley and a brother and sister-in-law, Wallace (Mary Jane) Carey.
Mr. Carey was a 1961 graduate of Piqua Catholic High School. After graduating, he attended Glenmary Seminary in Springdale for a short time. Doug had a love for music, and met his wife, Marilyn while working at a music store. Doug worked at the former Aerovent Fan Company for 29 years. He then worked with the Maintenance Dept. of the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School until his retirement. He was an accomplished musician and enjoyed playing the organ for Greenview United Church of Christ, the Piqua Church of the Brethren and various other churches in the Piqua area for the last 40 years. He was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the St. George Commandary of the Knights of St. John and the Archbishop McNicholas Council 3344 Knights of Columbus, where he served in many Officers positions including as its Grand Knight. He was a member of the Seniors of Greenview United Church of Christ in Sidney. In addition to his music he enjoyed train watching, genealogy and enjoyed volunteering in the genealogy department in the Piqua Public Library, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and loved vacationing on Cruise Ships. He will be remembered for his love of family and quick to socialize with family, friends and acquaintances who appreciated his easygoing and fun loving spirit. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2022 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Daniel P. Hunt as the Celebrant. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
