Donald M. Smith, 94, of Piqua, passed away peacefully at 7:22 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2024 at Springmeade Retirement Community. He was born July 17, 1929 in Piqua to the late Lee R. and Blanch L. (Miller) Smith. He married Kathleen J. Eiting September 12, 1948 in Piqua, she preceded him in death July 15, 2015.
Survivors include three children, Dr. David (Janie) Smith of Mansfield, Texas, Dorthea (Ken) Casselman of Morrow, and Kristine Stewart of Piqua; eight grandchildren, Heather Perne’, Ashley (Kaumyar) Delkash, Dr. Joshua Smith, Dr. Adam (Dr. Erin) Leininger, Andy (Libbey) Leininger, Katie (Ben Hitchman) Stewart, and twins, Dr. Grady Stewart and Cecily Stewart; nine great grandchildren; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Florence R. Rong, three brothers and two sisters, and his son in law, Cecil Stewart.
Mr. Smith was a 1947 graduate of Piqua Central High School and retired in 1991 as an Administrator of the Sales Dept. of the Hobart Corp. He was an active member of Greene Street United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School, and was a member of Methodist Men. He was a long time active member of the Piqua Kiwanis Club, where he served as its President, the Lieutenant Governor and named Kiwanian of the Year in 1997 and 2000. Additionally, he was a Founding Board member of the local Habitat for Humanity, past President of the former High Street School PTA and a former Boy Scout Leader. With his lifelong interest in aviation, he was a member of the Radio Controlled Hawks Model Airplane Club and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He will be remembered for his love of family and positive influence of the Piqua community.
A service to honor his life will begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2024 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Pastor Will Leasure officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greene Street United Methodist Church, 415 W.
