VIRGINIA MONTGOMERY

Elizabeth Virginia (Statler) Montgomery, 99, of Piqua, died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Piqua Manor Nursing Home. "Virginia" as she was known, was the beloved daughter of the late Lester Blaine and Mary F. (Shipley) Statler and sister of the late Martha F. Statler. The Statler family was well known in Piqua for its many friendships and involvement in community affairs.

Mrs. Montgomery was born April 2, 1909 at the Statler homestead on Statler Road. She graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1926 and then worked at the former Atlas Underwear Company . She was a talented musician and played the piano and organ for many high school, church, social and civic functions. She continued her musical activities for over seventy-five years.

Mrs. Montgomery was the wife of the late Gaylord Clayton Montgomery, whom she met while he was teaching at Piqua Central High School, and married August 30, 1930 in Piqua, a marriage that would continue for sixty-seven years. Mr. Montgomery died in 1998. Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery moved to Akron and New York City before settling in St. Louis for thirty-seven years while Mr. Montgomery was teaching at the John Burroughs School. In St. Louis, Mrs. Montgomery was active in church activities including teaching Sunday school and forming a sewing group that crafted Advent calendars. She was an accomplished seamstress and well known for her creativity.

Following Mr. Montgomery's retirement from John Burroughs's School, they moved to Durham, N.C. where he helped to establish the secondary school of Durham Academy. They returned to Piqua in 1975 where they maintained a home on Maplewood Drive for twenty-five years. They were members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 1987 Mrs. Montgomery created banners for the church commemorating the church's 175th anniversary.

Mrs. Montgomery is survived by her daughter, Marilyn M. Sebastian and son-in-law, Richard A. Sebastian, Jr. of Silver Spring, Maryland; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Chandler Sebastian of Frederick, Md., Richard A. Sebastian, III of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dr. Dan Gaylord Montgomery of Inverness, Fla., and Virginia Montgomery Gause of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; six great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. A son, Douglas G. Montgomery, and a grandson, David Statler Montgomery, preceded her in death.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday January 7, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kazy Blocher Hinds officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home.
