Cleaning Monuments

 Cleaning Marble Memorial Stones

We often get calls about cleaning Marble Memorials. The method we use is the same as, what is recommended by, the Monument Builders of North America, from a 2008 article.

Many commercial cleaners will do more harm than good.  A stronger cleaner and water solution is not better. Constantly cleaning marble will accelerate the erosion process. Marble is a soft stone.

Cleaning Solution: 1 part white household ammonia and 4 parts water.  Be sure to rinse the stone with lots of clean water in the beginning and the end.  Start at the bottom and work upward with a soft bristled brush only.

As marble ages, the inscriptions will become harder to read.  Marble is affected by Acid Rain which slowly dissolves the stone.  We suggest replacing these memorials with ones made of granite.  Granite is a very hard material and shows little or no affect from Acid Rain.

 Cleaning Granite Memorial Stones

Cleaning Solution: 1 part white household ammonia and 4 parts water.  Be sure to rinse the stone with lots of clean water in the beginning and the end.  Start at the bottom and work upward with a soft bristled brush only.  With granite you may also use powered soap such as Ajax which will not hurt the granite.

An additional option is to have it power washed.  This cleans the monument very well, especially if you have cleaned the granite as directed above.

 Cleaning Bronze Memorial Markers

When new, Bronze markers possess some paint and a clearcoat.  Clean with clear water and a soft cloth. While this is no guarantee, applying a clear coat every few years will help maintain the appearance of the plaque.

Any cleaners can harm the clearcoat and paint, and the marker will oxidize quicker.  If the plaque is completely void of all paint and clear coat, cleaning will not hurt or help the marker.  The only way to make it look new is to pay to have the plaque completely refinished.
